132-kilogram teenager from Utah sets new deadlift world record

Drake Slattery, a 16-year-old at American Fork High School (Utah), has set a new deadlift world record.

Weighing just 132 pounds, Slattery set a new record in his weight class at 423 pounds in the deadlift in 2023 United States of power lifting Nationals on July 10 in Las Vegas.

Slattery said Heather W Smith at ABC4 Utah that he works out 4-6 times a week but has other interests including skiing which is what inspired him to take up weightlifting in the first place.

“There was just something about it, it was different.” It was special for me… Every time I hit something like a new max or something new or was able to do more reps than I had in the past, I had a sense of accomplishment and it really boosted my self-esteem and helped me feel a lot better.”

Slattery will then compete in London this fall, where he will attempt to break his deadlift record of 450 pounds, and then aim for the world junior squat record.
