In 2011, Brooklyn-based designer Raul Lopez founded Luar, seeking to fill a gap in fashion design. He created garments based on the low and middle-income communities he grew up among in New York, a perspective that has garnered mass popularity for the brand. Luar would go on to win both a CFDA Award and LVMH Prize for their bold designs and continues to create out-of-the-box collections that integrate Lopez’s unique lens. Now, Lopez returns to Fashion Week, presenting Luar’s Fall/Winter 2024 Collection in his home neighborhood of Brooklyn to a star-studded audience of Beyoncé and Princess Nokia among other public figures.
Dubbed “Deceptionista,” Lopez takes inspiration from metrosexuality, embedding his own personal life experiences and notions of sexuality into his designs. Through the collection, he aims to explore the nuance in fluidity and the idea of metrosexuality as a trapdoor to acceptance. Ensembles feature exaggerated silhouettes, bold textures, and faux fur accents, acting as visual manifestations of Lopez’s “Deceptionista.”
