Best MLS Player 2023: The 10 Greatest MLS Players

What physical traits do you need to be successful in soccer? Height seems to matter after all as Cristiano Ronaldo is something of a giant isn’t he? Ah, maybe not, because what about Lionel Messi? He is on the small side and probably better than Ronaldo. There’s no hard and fast rule that says you have to be tall to be good at football, but positions like goalkeeper and defenders will certainly benefit from physicality and a strong presence. Here’s the countdown to find the MLS Player of the Year for 2023…

The greatest player of MLS 2023

10) Omar Gonzalez, 195 cm, New England Revolution

At the top of our list of the greatest MLS players is a veteran of the game. Omar Gonzalez is 1.95 meters tall.

The contemporary New England Revolution defender may not have played as many games under Bruce Arena’s current system, but he certainly serves as a pillar of inspiration as a USMNT legend. As a native Texan, he fits perfectly with the phrase “Everything is bigger in Texas.”

9) Jack Elliott, 196 cm, Philadelphia Union

The 1.90-meter-tall Englishman is at the heart of the Philadelphia Union’s defense. Perhaps Jack Elliott’s physique owes an American upbringing to his athletic formative years, when he left Fulham Academy to enroll in a collegiate football program at West Virginia University.

Now 27, he is one of the biggest players in the league and important to the Union.

8) Shanyder Borgelin, 196 cm, Inter Miami CF

When you compile this list for the biggest MLS player of 2023, you’d expect it to be almost entirely made up of goaltenders and strong defenders.

Well, Shanyder Boreglin bucks that trend. The 21-year-old forward is on the verge of breaking into Inter Miami CF’s first team after playing a number of games in MLS and even scoring a goal. However, the extra-tall player could be eliminated from the rankings if Lionel Messi enters the game.

7) Jackson Ragen, 198 cm, Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders defense is heavily represented at Lumen Field. Jackson Ragen is honored today as a Seattle native who plays for his hometown club, which happens to be one of the best in America.

However, things could have turned out very differently as he was initially drafted by the Chicago Fire but then decided to play more college soccer and eventually returned to the Sounders.

6) Javier Otero, 198 cm, Orlando City SC

Orlando City SC is waiting for one of the biggest MLS players of 2023. Their backup goalkeeper Javier Otero may only be 20 years old, but he is still 1.90 meters tall.

The young Venezuelan has been seen on the bench a few times in 2023, but mostly plays in MLS Next Pro with the B team.

5) Ben Martino, 198 cm, Nashville SC

Another goalkeeper on the youth team who is 1.80m tall is Ben Martino of Nashville SC. He has been named on several substitute lists but has yet to be called up to the first team.

For now, he will continue to play for MLS Next Pro franchise teams until he is ready for first-team responsibility.

4) Ben Lundt, 198 cm, St Louis City SC

Ben Lundt is another player in the 1.90m group of goalkeepers who is behind someone else in terms of first place. Ben Lundt faces the tough task of unseating club captain and former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki.

A tall order by any measure, especially considering Burke is fighting to become one of the best players in MLS this season. However, Lundt was given playing time in the US Open Cup.

3) Luka Gavran, 198 cm, Toronto FC

With all the problems at Toronto FC, Luka Gravan could be called into action sooner rather than later after Sean Johnson’s performance has turned out poorly.

He has been seen on the bench in MLS and with Toronto struggling what could it hurt to give a 20-year-old 1.95m goalkeeper a try?

2) Hunter Sulte, 201 cm, Portland Timbers

Alaskans must be physically strong to withstand the rigors of extremely cold weather. Hunter Sulte had no problem with his height of 1.90 meters, which certainly gives him excellent command of the field.

The 21-year-old is yet to concede a goal in MLS Next Pro, but has trained with the first team and even played in the US Open Cup.

1) Matthew Nocita, 203 cm, New York Red Bulls

Matthew Nocita is officially the biggest MLS player of 2023. Although originally from California, he spent some time in the US Navy, where he eventually resurfaced on the East Coast signing with the New York Red Bulls.

At 23 years old, Nocita is still primarily a part of MLS Next Pro’s second team. However, as part of the first team, the defender is often on the bench but is simply not selected to make the difference in the middle of the game. There is no doubt that if he demonstrates the technical ability with New York Red Bulls II, he will make his first team debut as he already has the fitness to succeed as a dominant defender.
