The film itself is nothing more than a poorly crafted, poorly acted spoof that is not interested in interrogating the social complexities of Kerala, a state of India proud of its multi-religious and multi-ethnic identity. All that is intended is to create more simplistic, paper-thin characters to tell us that Kerala is in danger because its innocent, naïve Hindu and Christian girls are being subjugated by evil Muslim men and radicalized to the point of of no return.

Sen’s screenplay is mainly about how the supposed entrapment of Hindu girls works. For those who are unaware, the term ‘love jihad’ was first used by the Catholic Church in Kerala. He blames deracination for their predicament. His analogy seems to suggest that atheists and Hindus, who have no particular interest in their religion, tend to radicalize more quickly than those who are practicing believers. The film runs for two hours and is more or less engaging throughout.

The story of Kerala becomes very melodramatic and manipulative due to its excessive background part which literally enhances the performance of the actors to inform us about the purpose and turmoil of the characters. Even the sightings of the real victims and their appearances at the end are not convincing enough to create the uncomfortable tension that was required for such a horrific story. It’s always good to have debates about movies and whether they’re made or not, whether they’re propaganda or not, but like great intentions, great debates don’t make great movies.

At certain moments, the film feels more like a radicalization tutorial than entertainment for the audience. She also goes to extremes to express her opinion, and this can be quite disturbing for audiences belonging to different communities in our country. After watching The Kerala Story, you may be left with a few questions about the current state of the country. This thought-provoking film is disturbing and sure to leave an impact.

Kerala’s history follows a documentary-style format and thus a lot of movement back and forth between past and present, and between landscapes. The ‘History of Kerala’, in this regard, is very well cut. The parallel stories of past and present are well balanced with the makers sometimes expanding scenes and sequences of brutal violence, rape and exploitation to hammer home the agony of the women affected by it. The screenplay of ‘The Kerala Story’ is also quite engaging and keeps you hooked till the end of the movie.

The story of Kerala is manipulative storytelling at its best, and that is not good. Be a smart audience and ask questions about the content you’re watching. Mark its importance and check if it is essential. If not, stay away from her and don’t let her have any part of your brain.
