Prep Hoops: Second-ranked Colony girls rout No. 4 Thunder Mountain 71-31 to extend 10-game winning streak

It was hard to pick just one thing the Colony girls basketball team did well Friday night.

That’s because there were so many. From pinpoint passing to crashing the glass to draining 10 3-pointers, the Knights looked like the total package.

And then there was Hallie Clark.

The two-time first-team all-state guard delivered a dominating offensive performance to lead No. 2-ranked Colony over No. 4 Thunder Mountain 71-31 in a nonconference game in Juneau.

Clark scored 22 points, knocked down four 3s and dished a half dozen assists.

The junior floor general was the center of attention for a Knights team that improved to 19-2 and extended their winning streak to 10 games.

Clark fed Alycia Shelley for a 3-pointer to just beat the first-quarter buzzer and then buried back-to-back 3s at the end of the second quarter, with the second one coming with 6 seconds left before halftime.

Colony carried a 37-24 advantage into the break, with Clark racking up 16 points and five assists.

As a team, the Knights were in constant motion and registered nine assists on the first 14 field goals.

They kept it going in the third quarter as ball movement keyed a 17-0 run. Clark contributed a spinning layup and another drive with a left-hand finish before feeding Jericho Wuestenberg for a layup in transition.

Bella Shelley’s 3 pushed the lead to 54-25. Colony’s intensity never dipped as the Knights played like they had a statement to make.

Message delivered.

The Northern Lights Conference is the class of Alaska with the league boasting the state’s top three ranked teams in No. 1 Mountain City Christian, No. 2 Colony and No. 3 Wasilla.

Thunder Mountain got a taste Friday. This was just the second loss for the Southeast Conference frontrunner in 17 games this season.

Early on, the matchup between ranked teams looked to be a good one. There were three lead changes in the first few minutes before Clark and Alycia Shelley took over.

Colony built a 23-13 lead behind Shelley’s 11 points and Clark’s eight points and four assists.

Thunder Mountain’s Kerra Baxter led her team with 12 points, including a 3-pointer that pulled the Falcons within 25-18 midway through the second quarter. Mikah Carandang added seven points, all coming in the first half.

Colony countered with a 12-4 run to stake a 37-22 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Knights never stopped attacking and trapping. They outscored Thunder Mountain 34-9 and triggered a running clock for the final four minutes.
