Qualcomm licenses aptX and aptX HD codecs on Android • Gadget Universe

Qualcomm has now made the aptX and aptX HD high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This means that manufacturers will no longer need to pay Qualcomm for licenses if they want to bring the codec to their Android smartphones.

Qualcomm licenses the aptX and aptX HD codecs on Android

Previously, even though an Android smartphone used Qualcomm’s own chip, manufacturers still had to pay licensing fees if they offered aptX and aptX HD codecs.

So with Qualcomm’s latest move, it looks like more devices will support hi-fi wireless audio formats in the future, including budget phones.

However, this only applies to these two types of encoding. Advanced versions such as aptX Adaptive and aptX Low Latency are not included in AOSP.

In addition, for audio equipment manufacturers, they still have to pay licensing fees. Therefore, aptX-enabled TWS devices or Bluetooth headphones are likely to cost a bit more than traditional codecs like SBC or AAC.
