With the 2023 NBA Draft in the history books, it’s time to look ahead and talk about the Summer League players to watch in 2023.
As you may already know, the Summer League is our first chance to see the stars of tomorrow at work, and some of them are proving to be instantly special and way ahead of the competition.
Summer League players to watch in 2023
Of course, Summer League competition isn’t always elite, so it’s hard to jump to conclusions — for better or worse — after a few appearances against rookies, sophomores and undrafted players. However, we bring you the top five Summer League players to keep an eye on in 2023.
5. Anthony Black
Our list begins with Anthony Black, but not only for his obvious gifts. The Orlando Magic showed brief moments of untapped potential last season despite their record, and the only thing holding them back was the lack of a franchise point guard — an issue they addressed with Black in the NBA draft.
Black is the ultimate dog, an elite player, a great retriever and an athlete. He’s a fierce competitor who’s always looking to prove the doubters wrong, but his lack of a reliable jump shot could present a major handicap for him. How will he react in the league? We will have to see.
4. Scott Henderson
You know Scoot Henderson has a big shot after falling to No. 3 in the draft. If that wasn’t enough motivation, the fact that Damian Lillard decided not to play him and asked for a trade will only put more weight on his shoulders going forward.
Despite his size, Henderson has the makings of a potential superstar. Perhaps the most athletic player in the draft, his combination of raw power, strength and speed is fascinating. He’s a highlight every time, waiting to step into the game and he’ll be looking forward to proving he’s the best player in his class.
3. Brandon Miller
If you look at the top 3, chances are this ranks as one of the best draft classes of all time.
Brandon Miller has been a fast mover in most drafts for good reason, as he has the potential to be a blocking defender, a quality and efficient scorer at all three levels, and an outstanding playmaker.
The San Antonio Spurs scouting department drew comparisons between him and Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, and the resemblance is definitely there. He has impressive shooting skills and could become a two-way star.
2. Chet Holmgren
Not too long ago, people talked about Chet Holmgren the same way they talked about Victor Wembanyama, both for better and for worse. He missed his entire rookie season, but that has helped him build muscle, hit the gym, watch video, and now prepare to dominate.
Holmgren will be a man on a mission from day one. He will try to prove that he is a real unicorn. It’s the US against the rest of the world; It’s the battle of the two towers. Holmgren is an elite clutch rim protector, but he needs to prove he’s healthy.
1. Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama stands alone on the list of nominees for the most hyped NBA draft, even ahead of Zion Williamson. With all the unrealistic expectations currently being placed on him, people can make him fail, but he can be that good.
Wembanayma will be a must-see from day one and that includes the NBA Summer League. His ability is something we’ve never seen before, but people will also try to pick apart his game and call him a bust if he doesn’t dominate from the start.
